“Are you happy?”
The writer uses the character Clarisse as a main reason for montags change through the book, the quote forces Montag to think about whether he is fulfilled in life and if he is satisfied with his job, relationship and his freedom to make his own choices. In doing so it sparks a change in Montag as he starts to question whether he actually is happy or not.
“Like a pedestrian, only rarer” The writer is showing what Clarisse thinks of her and her family. The simile “like a pedestrian” suggests that Clarisse’s family doesn’t involve themselves in society’s norm, they simply stand back and watch, doing their own thing and obtaining knowledge. “Only rarer” suggest that even though pedestrians are extremely common in today’s society, there are not many families like Clarisse’s as all the other families are mindless drones, enslaved by society.
“Oh we’re most peculiar”
The writer is showing Clarisse’s views on her own lifestyle. The word choir of “Peculiar” has connotations of bizarre, abnormal and different. This suggests that Clarisse is aware her family are often seen as odd to the outside eye as the don’t conform to the social norms of society. The McLellan family have a different outlook on life with a thirst for knowledge and a love of nature and taking things slow. However they are highly aware that they are viewed by society as being weird.
