accidentally put this in the n5 close reading clinic instead
When the book first starts we see how Montag is a mindless drone of society. He is a fireman where he follows the orders of the government not to stop fires, but start them by burning books. Montag enjoys his job and describes the “grin” that never goes away. This shows how he is permanently occupied with fulfilling his duties. Montag never questions wether what he is doing is wrong. “His hands did it all” this shows how his mind does not even control his actions, society does. The society that Montag lives in is trying to destroy all of the books therefore destroying history, ideas and opinions. This then leads to the mindless drones like Montag who do not know any better as they have never known otherwise. Montag being a fireman is seen by the rest of society in a similar way SS soldiers were seen during WW2. The firemen, just like the SS carry out the orders of their superiors no matter what. The firemen are feared and we see this when Montag first meets Clarisse.
