When the book first starts we see how Montag is a mindless drone of society. He is a fireman where he follows the orders of the government not to stop fires, but start them by burning books. Montag enjoys his job and describes the “grin” that never goes away. This shows how he is permanently occupied with fulfilling his duties. Montag never questions wether what he is doing is wrong. “His hands did it all” this shows how his mind does not even control his actions, society does.
