The author uses the setting in time to highlight the woman’s loneliness. The story is set at Christmas time which should be a happy time of year. The author describes how the “shop was strung with skimpy tinselled decorations”. The decorations are “skimpy”, suggesting that they are half-hearted, old and tatty. They are not cared for; just like the lady. She does not enjoy this time of year and the decorations are visual reminders for her that she cannot escape. They mock her misery and loneliness. The setting in time is used effectively to show the loneliness of the woman. We can see that it’s a difficult time of year for her when she is reminded that she is truly on her own. The reader feels a great deal of sympathy for her as most people spend Christmas with friends and family but we see that she will be spending it alone. The theme of loneliness is dealt with by MacLaverty in a sensitive way which makes us feel pity for the lady.
