Plastic Surgery: A way to promote beauty or destroy it?
Modern technologies provide plenty of ways to create and present a person’s beauty. Nowadays plastic surgery is not only a profitable industry but also a great moral issue. On the other hand an opportunity to change ones appearance for the better becomes a continuous temptation that can often grow and become an obsession. Either way there are mixed views on plastic surgery, does it promote beauty or if it really destroys beauty.
In the public eye, throughout media plastic surgery is advertised everywhere and is a massive profitable issue and a big topic to study. It is promoted all over the world to all ages and gender. Many teenagers have at least considered plastic surgery once in their teenage years mostly because their favourite celebrity has had a certain cosmetic surgery. In 2012 a magazine survey of 2,000 teenagers found that 60% of girls had considered plastic surgery. When in fact no teenager should be worrying about getting surgery on their body just to look like their favourite celebrity. For instance one of the main role models who is highly known for getting plastic surgery is Katie Price. She has had countless cosmetic surgeries on her face and body, ranging from Botox and lip filler. With her being the face of cosmetic surgery many people chose to copy her appearance even if this means going through many procedures. These results give us a clear understanding that plastic surgery is massively effecting the public. In April 2014 a report by the NHS medical director Sir Bruce Keogh found that 41% of girls aged seven to ten and 63% aged eleven to sixteen said they felt some pressure to look the way celebrities do. At the age of sixteen you should most definitely not be want to be changing your body as your body is still changing and developing. In my opinion plastic surgery is a lot more than it is worth especially being promoted to the public all over the world.
Most young adults in the generation say by thinking or having plastic surgery done to their body makes them feel more confident. A study conducted by the centre for Human Appearance at the University of Pennsylvania School of medicine found that 87% of patients felt satisfied following cosmetic surgery, with the added benefits of the improvement in their overall body image and with the part of their body that was transformed. These woman also felt less negative about their body image in both work and social situations. This evidence shows that the majority of people who go through the procedure of plastic surgery become more body confident within themselves and boosts their self-esteem. With this in mind I believe that plastic surgery can boosts self-confidence and help people with their desired body image.
Although plastic surgery can boost ones confidence and make them feel body confident, plastic surgery does give you an unrealistic body image. Giving that most images are edited and manipulated to create a completely unrealistic body image and people still choose to follow these images. According to American Society for Aesthetic nearly 11.7 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States in 2007 even though these people have seen the unrealistic body images that they are basing their bodies on even though they know most of the bodies they have seen have went through tonnes of procedures just to look the way they do. Also most of these bodies are not healthy. I personally think that the extent some people go to, to look fake and to copy or have an unrealistic body image is unnecessary and stupid as there are many dangers behind the procedures and it is also very costly.
A positive outlook on plastic surgery is that it can help improve physical health. Such as having rhino plasty or nose rehaping which can improve breathing especially if the patient has a blocked nasal passage and have been suggested surgery. It can also improve the aesthetics of the nose. According to Houston Centre 64% of people feel the health benefits to plastic surgery. Also another cosmetic procedure is body contouring such as liposuction to take the excess fat away and this can also help keep weight off which can reduce diabetes and obesity. I believe that is you are suggested to get some form of cosmetic surgery you should take it into consideration but also you should still consider the outcome and possibly the dangers and the statistics of how the procedures are effective.
According to the University of Pennsylvania certain surveys that were given out said that plastic surgery is destroying beauty and that natural should be promoted for everyone to feel comfortable in their own skin and not getting surgery. Results from UK modelling an online modelling website show that 70% out of 100 people surveyed said that people should embrace their own beauty as everyone is unique in their own way and shouldn’t feel the need to get surgery. I personally think that natural beauty is important and you should embrace yourself and be comfortable and confident in your own skin. Also you should accept the way you look as it is better than getting your face and body changed to fit the society concept of beauty and this is not the way to promote beauty.
In today’s world surgery is not cheap, very far from it. So most people should always take a good think before forking out money which they have worked many years for and that procedure might not work as good. For instance according to the American Academy of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Americans spent over seven billion last year on surgical procedures alone. This is a clear indication which shows that all the procedures are very expensive. For instance on average a nose job costs around £4,000, so people really should take the cost into consideration and think twice as some procedures have faults and may not go as planned and that would be a lot of money to lose and not only would they lose that money they would have to pay for corrective surgery depending on how bad the mistake was. In my opinion I do not think the money is worth it especially as it is not guaranteed to work and also I think it’s crazy to save up all of your working wage and just waste it on a procedure that could potentially ruin a part of your body.
To conclude I have explored some main points about plastic surgery the good and the bad. I have also mentioned if plastic surgery does promote beauty or destroy beauty and I have showed evidence for each argument and also my opinion. I personally believe that cosmetic surgery does destroy beauty as there is lots of arguments to back the evidence up but also I believe it is unnecessary as you should be comfortable in your own skin and embrace natural beauty rather than going through many procedures to look fake.
