Essay
Question: is the internet a force for good or a force for evil?
”The internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow” bill gates. The internet. The world’s biggest influence in society. around 3.2 billion people endure in the internet’s diamond volt of information without thinking about the small consequences lurking in the shadows. This essay is going to explore the attractiveness of the internet and its major breakthroughs its led to as what once was just a means of information has turned in to a way of constant communication with not only people but devices too. This essay is going to explore the mass use of the internet as well as the major strongholds and the inaccuracy’s that follow.
One major use of the internet is advertising, where it first came from being able to communicate through social media was money in the eyes of business men where they saw a world of people socialising with a block of their business taking up the user’s screen. The Everest of the internet is the social networking side where anyone can create an account thus entering the cyber world and giving their information to anyone. But as one person’s tool can be another’s weapon the usefulness of social network, the ability to talk to anyone allows a person to hide their true mask and adopt a new one that no one will ever see. Same can be said for the dark web, the eBay of drugs, weapons and organised crime. Although the internet is a mass tool of everyday life it is also the incredible tool for the unthinkable and allowing criminals to carry out their obsessions with ease as if they ever need something they’ll find it on the dark web.
Social media, the stepping stone to every path of the internet has become bigger than ever. This also opened doors to talk to the entire world. Where getting a real-world view is easy. Social media, help with this by gathering the viewers as 1.59 billion people are signed up. A virtual playground for information and people who want to know someone can ask anyone on a social site and get it almost instantly. “if you’re going to eat the candy, deal with the tooth ache” Casey Neistat. If you’re going to use the free aspects of the internet you’re going to have to put up with the advertisements and the web monitoring. As another part of the trend is monitoring an individual’s web searches and identifying what they like so when advertisements do show up it is relevant to the viewer and not irrelevant.
Information is another fine art of the web where people can literally ask any question and get a relevant answer. It can also be used to publish the answer through documents and articles where newspapers and magazines have adopted the online life. At the start being able to access theories and publish results for everyone was good, until others came and contradicted ad argued with results and ultimately made so much information invalid with sites coming along making it easy to edit others articles and findings makes it hard to find real true work. WikiLeaks a trivial website where information can be found out about governments, mainly information the government don’t want us to know.this has encouraged whistle blowers to come out and post their experiences where xorruption has taken place and this mainly happens in the usa. Edward snowden was made famous by conforming the NSA surveillance project which was a new agency called the National Security Agency built solely to spy on America to help catch potential terrorists, but although its for a worthy cause, its still illegal.
The internet is always going to grow ever since it began its gotten bigger and never stopped and now is available in 100 countries. Although the internet only contains information the information now a day can heavily influence the younger generation as it is very easy to access. YouTube, once a video paradise where people could listen to music or watch funny videos has now created a new profession of vloggers there’s over 100 vloggers who post about their day to day activities, although this doesn’t seem to be influencing the top vloggers who catch the eyes of big companies have around11 million viewers who are almost guaranteed to watch every video posted by that vlogger. Why does big company have an interest in this? Because if someone who idolises someone will listen to what he has to say and f they say “ try this” they will. Another example is celebrities posting on other social media like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube and advertise anything whether its apps, make up, other Youtubers or certain brands don’t consider what the brand they are advertising represent and is only in it for the money. This is bad as viewers who look up to the celebrity are obviously trying it purely on the basis their idol is trying it. Comparing now to 20 years ago everyone was more judgemental of what we do and say now with freedom of speech act of 1998 and more freedom on the internet these vloggers basically get paid for giving their thoughts and opinions which has ultimately encourage youngsters to do the same.
The internet is always growing and getting bigger to the point till help everyone from police to an individual person for whatever reason. The internet is good to an extent where it is used appropriately and individuals who believe this are also helping from all over the world and therefore makes the internet useful.
