From a very young age I have always been interested in sports whether it was football, dancing, basketball or fitness. As I have grew up I’ve always had a passion for dance, I used to perform free style which I won trophy’s for many years and in the past 3 years I have gained another 2 classes such as tap and modern, which I am currently working hard and working my way to more exam dances.
I have worked in a shop for over 3 years, working behind the counter, handling cash and getting stock for the shop, this has developed my sense of responsibility, dealing with others and my time management skills. This makes me feel good about myself as I have started from an early age making money for myself.
At the start off 2015 I started my own fitness class in Falkirk High School which I started from scratch and developed into a weekly occurrence. This took place every Monday for a minimum of an hour after school, I taught pupils from S1-6 how to use the equipment safely, how to build how their fitness levels, monitor their training and evaluate their training programme. I would always make sure the pupils wore appropriate clothing and shoes and were well warmed up so they wouldn’t be in any danger of slipping or in any way of becoming injured. The class carried out for a full year from 2015 – summer 2016. I supervised the class myself which carried a lot of responsibilities. It worked on my leadership and worked well with others no matter what age/ability they were or what their specific needs were. This made me feel good helping younger and older pupils to get fitter and help them to improve there ability.
I have also represented in the Falkirk high school girls football team for many years we trained and worked together with new members joining as the years went on, working well with each other and making new players feel welcome, as we trained or travelled after school to play other schools around our area. This helped me to excel working within a team and as I have gotten older I became the organiser, figuring out when we train and what we need to work on, working with younger pupils for them to have fun but also become more interested in playing for the school team. This made me feel better about myself because i helped people to feel more comfortable around older and younger pupils in order to boost their confidence
In 2015-2016 I started a football class at Comely Park which started with 17 pupils increasing to 30 participants by the end of the term, both genders were well represented with the main increase in numbers being girls joining. I would organise my own sessions and our own rules\conditions suitable to the children’s needs within the class. Every week my class would progress more and become more confident about their own ability and building up more skill repertoire along the way. This boosted my confidence a lot, helping younger pupils to achieve their goals and make them enjoy doing fitness and to look forward to a Friday afternoon.
In the past few years I have helped out with sports days through school and Active schools, I went to primary schools including Limerigg, Comely Park, Langlees and Slamanan, I had to help set up the courses to help pupils to achieve their goals.
Throughout my Easter holidays last year I went to the Marnier Centre with Active Schools and carried out games and skill development classes that were to help younger kids have a beneficial and fun Easter holidays, during this time I worked with kids with difficulties.
This was as a results of studying the Community Sports Leaders Award in school which highly engaged me and gave me a real passion for coaching and inspiring young people. I was recognised by Comely Park, as their Head Teacher contacted Falkirk High’s Head Teacher to praise my Leadership, organisational skills and mostly the way I inspired the pupils. This led me to becoming a more confident individual and having better leadership qualities.
I was recognised by Falkirk High School as I received the Sports Leader Award at the annual prize giving along with the prestigious trophy for Service to the Wider Community.
I was also honoured to be awarded with Falkirk’s Active Schools Sports Leader of the Year Award at the Annual Awards ceremony. I received this award not only for completing 120 hours of leading over the year but for the quality of my work. This was unexpected and humbling as I received the award for doing something that I enjoy and get a great deal of satisfaction from.
This made me feel amazing and so great about what I achieved and who I had helped along my sports leader journey. This has boosted my confidence throughout my sports career and helped me to apply to become a bigger and better athlete.
