This is from the paper we completed in class. If you missed it and want a copy of the paper, let me know.
• In this extract, we see Deirdre as an outsider who has entered Marie’s home. She does not seem particularly thankful for Marie’s hospitality and she ignores most of their questions. She makes the women feel uncomfortable and creates tension.
• In the whole play we can see that Deirdre is a character who is a catalyst who is in search of the truth. She exploits the women in different ways and forces them to face the truth. In this process, Deirdre changes their lives to varying degrees.
• “There is a pause while everyone watches the TV in an uncomfortable silence” Deirdre makes the women feel uncomfortable in their own home. The women are used to chatting constantly and Deirdre’s arrival brings tension and conflict to their lives. They do not know how to act around her and so we see her begin to have an effect on their lives.
• “I need a knife. A wee blade of my own…A wee bit of hard truth you could hold in your hand and point where you liked”. In her role as a catalyst, she forces the women to face up to the truth which causes a great deal of conflict. The knife symbolises the truth for Deirdre. Deirdre sees the knife and violence as her only ways to find the truth. She has grown up surrounded by violence and sees violence as the only answer.
• “No one will tell you the truth to your face”. The truth is what Deirdre is seeking. Deirdre just wants to know who her dad is but she cannot find the truth. In her quest for the truth, she makes the other characters face their own truths. She also sees the knife (which is a major symbol of truth in the play) as the only way to get the truth from people. She does not trust that the women will face the truth unless they are threatened.
