Is technology ruining lives?
Do you spend more time on your iPhones, iPads and laptops rather than you do with family? Have you ever considered the impact that these technological devices are having on our ability to lead active, healthy and motivational lives? Society as we know it is being eaten up by technology. We no longer prioritize face to face conversation but choose to communicate behind masks in the shape of iPhones and tablets. Honestly, how much of your time is spent on technology?
Children are spending an alarming amount of time on technology rather than being with their families or engaging in active social situations. The time children spend on technology is terrible as they spend roughly 10 hours of their day looking at a screen that is 3650 hours a year. Technology is ruining family relationships because back in the day (before technology was so advanced) children used to sit with their families and talk about their day or go out places for family time. People cannot go a day without spending more than an hour on a piece of technology. Children spend more of their time indoors playing an x-box or PlayStation rather than going out and spending time with friends and having fun. I personally spend a lot of my time on technology and I am hardly out anymore. I think technology has taken over my life as I cannot go at least an hour without going on my smart phone. As technology continues to advance, will I ever be able to escape this unhealthy habit? Will you?
Admittedly technology is not all that bad, if you have to get in contact with someone then all you will have to do is pull out your mobile phone then phone or give them a text. If you are in a bad situation, technology comes in very handy because if you were in trouble you could phone the police or someone who knows you well to come pick you up. If you saw a crime you could pull out your mobile, iPod then take a picture so you can keep it as evidence and the criminal would not suspect anything because most people these days are glued to at least one piece of technology. Technology has come in handy for many things these days, in extreme situations mobile phones are always something that people rely on and I agree with this but if there’s someone nearby don’t be scared to go ask for help because by the time the person you have contacted arrived it may just be too late.
Technology for the most parts, is dangerous. For example if you are listening to music in your headset you can cross the road and not see a car coming and you wouldn't be able to hear it. The car will hit you and you could end up in a hospital bed or if worse comes to worst you might end up dead. Additionally if you have technology you could be hacked and the hacker could send inappropriate messages or images to family and friends and you wouldn't even know. If you get hacked the hacker could use your mobile to do some things like hack peoples social media accounts or get your family members contact details, they may also hack into police records or put viruses on other people's technology. The police could trace your every move and will think you are committing crimes but it really isn't you. You could prevent this by putting a passcode on your mobile devices so that he can’t get access into your device and perform his illegal crimes.
The most damaging effect of technology is on our health- both mental and physical. Over using technology can develop bad habits like a person’s lack of sleep and lack of social skills. Millions of people text, E-mail or message people instead of meeting face to face, in the moment, this is for convenience however it will not help in the future. If you apply for a job and get an interview you wouldn't be as confident as you would as you would not be able to look at them and speak your mind, you would just be distracted more as you are not used to face to face communication. People spend a lot of time on their technology even when there is more important things to worry about like finding time to sleep. If you do not get the sleep that is needed which according to the NHS website is: Children under 18 usually need more sleep, up to 10 hours a night. Adults should get between 7-8 hours per night be fully rested for optimum health. If children do not get sleep because of technology then the next day they will be tired and won’t want to do anything. I agree with the NHS website with the sleeping times because parents always give their children a specific bed time so they have the best opportunity to get the best amount of sleep possible. Obesity is a big problem in the UK, technology is one of a few reasons for obesity because when people spend all their time on technology they forget about exercising. Exercising is important as it keeps you healthy and it helps you to relax and forget about stress and it helps you get away from technology for an hour or two.
Despite everything been discussed so far, technology is a big distraction for everyone. However it is even more of a distraction for teenagers who have exams and tests. Teenagers get distracted very easily when it comes to revising for exams or tests because they just find it boring or challenging. The ease of access to technology adds a strong barrier against motivation for teenagers as it can provide an easy escape from reality. If teenagers want to past tests and their very important exams they have to get rid of all their distracting things like technology and get out the revision and work well. They can have an hour break to go on technology but only if they do the best they could have. People are being distracted a lot by technology and it is not helping them with anything. I think technology should be banned in a work place and schools. The Only technology I think that should be allowed is computers but you would be monitored on everything that you do on it. Stricter restrictions of the use of technology will be a good step to breaking down our increasing reliability of it. Teenagers are more concerned about what is going on in social media rather than being concerned with what their future will be like if they don’t focus on their grades and do well for themselves.
In conclusion people should spend less time on their technology and get out and live their lives. There will come a day when everyone thinks back on their life and thinks to themselves" I should have spent more time with loved ones and less time on something that showed you videos and social media through a screen instead, I should have went out with friends and had face to face chat". People have and will miss out on important things just because they want to spend it on technology. If you put 10 kids who are obsessed with being on their phones or social media where they wouldn’t be able to get Wi-Fi then they wouldn’t have a clue on what to do with themselves.
