“Remote”
Create a spider diagram with points, evidence and comments for the following topics;
Sympathy for the old lady
• Husband commits suicide at Christmas
• She doesn’t feel she belongs on the island
• Alone at Christmas
• Physically isolated from society
• Socially isolated – no friends/family/forgotten how to socialise
• Old and frail
• Worries about how others see her.
No sympathy for the old lady
• She could move away but chooses to stay.
• Makes no effort with others
• She’s judgemental of others
• Manipulates other people
• Doesn’t ask for help – too proud
How is she unique?
• She’s realistic (isolated, she has flaws, bitter, guilty, proud)
• She faces lots of challenges but tries to overcome them.
• We feel both sympathy and no sympathy for her – we feel conflicted about our feelings towards her.
• Characterisation - She’s unpredictable, manipulative, depressed, lonely, gone through a lot of trauma.
• Background/history – she has gone through a lot and is still strong.
Your response to the story
• We felt sympathy for her (setting, characterisation, plot…)
• Made me feel lucky and appreciate what I’ve got – brought up the theme of loneliness. Made me think about people who will be alone at Christmas.
• It brought up the issue of mental health – husband committed suicide/depression. She’s confused about her feelings about this (bitter/sad)
• She faces lots of challenges but still tries to overcome these. It shows that no matter how bad things get, you shouldn’t give up/ask for help.
Challenges she faces
• Death of her husband
• Getting old/frail
• Feeling like an outsider
• Loneliness - socially
• Maintaining her pride
• It’s Christmas time
• Isolated physically
• Socially awkward
