“Bold Girls”
Create a spider diagram with points, evidence and comments for the following topics;
THEME – Truth and Reality
• Marie, Cassie and Nora avoid facing the truth
• They have escape devices – Marie (feeding the birds), Nora (decorating/peach fabric) and Cassie (drinking/promiscuous).
• They all have different views of the past – Nora (Sean/domestic abuse/standing up to the police), Cassie (dad =perfect), Marie (marrying Michael, life was perfect, she was lucky).
• Their views are unreliable.
• Deirdre makes them face the truth – CATALYST
• Knife symbolises the truth (violence is the only way to get it)
• Marie reacts violently, Nora is devastated (fabric), Cassie’s friendship is destroyed.
THEME – Relationships
• The three women seem to get on at first. During the play we see tension between Nora and Cassie.
• Deirdre also causes tension between the women by forcing them to face the truth.
• By the end of the play, their relationships are changed.
The role of men and women
• Women – serve the men, housewives, bring up the children, not equal, used by men
• Men – workers, use women, cheat, drinking, betting, violent, fighting for the cause, watch TV.
• Nora has traditional views of men and women’s roles. Cassie disapproves of this. (dinner)
• Cassie feels they should be proud to be women. Bold and confident. “To the bold girls”. Marie and Nora are more old fashioned. Nora sees being bold as a bad thing.
The importance of the past
• Marie – wedding day, bet, moving house. Fond memories of happy times. Feelings of love, admiration, sadness and regret for Michael. Romanticised memories of past (accurate?). Past is important for clinging on to Michael.
• Cassie – her dad. Fond memories of her dad being the perfect man. The only man she’s ever loved/respected. Memories not accurate but she likes to think about him.
• Nora – domestic abuse, standing up for Joe (arrested). She felt powerful, useful and bold when standing up to the police. She felt like she was a part of something (the cause). Tells this story a lot – first time (only time) she’s felt like that.
• Memories are romanticised, not accurate. The women take comfort in their memories.
Women’s attitude towards the men
• Cassie – negative attitude (apart from dad). They’re only after one thing, tantalises them. Feels women should be equal. Doesn’t want the traditional role of a woman.
• Nora – respectful, loves her sons – they are perfect, Blinded by love and duty. Fearful of Sean, fights for their rights (Joe). Fond memories of the men (bet – funny, sees them as childish/foolish).
• Marie – Michael was a saint – brave, kind, lucky to have him (unworthy of him). Respectable, grieving widow. Illusion is shattered by Cassie. Thinks all men are the same but still loves him. Scared to share her POV in case he left.
