In this extract and throughout the whole novel, Calum is seen as an innocent and gentle character who is victimised and attacked by everyone around him.
Numerous situations arise as Duror attempts to bring evil upon Calum and disturb him. Firstly at5 the start of the novel, Duror in his sneaky actions leaves a crippled rabbit in a snare to suffer knowing Calum will see this and be lured to the situation. Calum goes to help the rabbit. ‘’No creature on earth would help it, other rabbits would attack it, because it was crippled. This shows Calum sees himself in the broken animal. Just as Calum is victimised and attacked by others and so too the rabbit ids attacked he senses this connection. It’s also disturbing in the way Duror and Laddie Runcie Campbell see Calum as they describe him as a ‘’feeble minded hunchback’’ this excludes him as normal. Calums raw caring side is shown as he views the animal as equal and of importance where everyone else views Calum and the rabbit as beneath them and as nothing. This gives the impression on calums character that he is gentle and affectionate.
Again Jenkins portrays calums character as innocent caring and gentle as he is confused and struggles to come to grips with how humans are treating other humans in such inhumane ways. “He had been told that all over the world in the war now being fought men, woman and children were being slaughtered in thousand’s; cuties were being burnt down. He couldn’t not understand it.” This showing that he has a naïve nature but also his peaceful and loving approach which if shared would result in a more peaceful, and loving society. If everyone shared the views of Calum then the world would result in a better place. This once again gives the impression that Calum is a caring and gentle character.
