Calum in Cone Gathers by Robin Jenkins is protrayed as a pure and innocent character victimized by others. A key scene which this is show would be the “Beach Hut”. His innocence is clearly shown through his conversation with Neil and him being compared to the broken wooden doll. “It was a small wooden doll naked with a comical red cheeked face, one leg was missing” Here we see through symbolism Calum’s connection with the doll as he sees himself within it. Having the determination to fix it as he sees beauty in everything. His desire to restore the doll to a perfect state, contrasts with how others see him. With his disability they to see him as broken and imperfect. The only person who understands and believes Calum is fully a kind soul is his brother Neil who reminds him. “But don’t change, keep being yourself, your better than all of us” Calum has better morals than others around him, he sees things in a different perspective. Although Lady Campbell is of higher class and has more of a say in society, Calum will always come out on top as the better person. If we to see things as he did and took it all in, the world would be a better and more peaceful place.
