By referring to chapter 1 and the rest of the novel, explore how Jenkins create an impression of Calum’s character. The Beach Hut
Jenkins uses the beach hut incident in the novel to create a strong impression of Calum’s character. Calum and Neil enter Lady Runcie Campbell beach hut without permission to shelter from the storm outside. Calum finds Sheila’s dolls that is described as:
‘It was a small wooden doll naked, with a comical red cheeked face: one leg was missing’
Calum is attracted to this broken doll in the beach hut as it is almost a mirror image of himself, as he is viewed as broken due to his deformity. Calum’s caring nature is shown once again as he does not like to see anything suffering in pain and so tries to fix its broken leg. Also that this doll is linked with Calum himself it may also suggest that Calum is trying to fix himself as he knows he is not perfect. In the beach hut Neil says to Calum:
‘Keep being yourself, you’re better than all of us’
Despite Calum’s appearance and deformity and that he is nothing but a simple man his values and beliefs are of those which could make the world a better place. Although Calum is below Lady Runcie Campbell in the hierarchy he is viewed as a better person than all of them due to having better morals.
