Calum’s innocent nature is portrayed throughout the novel, in the deer drive incident we get a deeper insight into his character and the love he has for nature and the animals which live in the wood. Calum expresses his love for nature when a deer is shot and he “screaming in sympathy heedless of the danger of being shot, Calum flung himself upon the deer, clasped it round the neck and tried to comfort it.” This shows Calum’s immaturity and love for nature as by throwing himself on the deer he is putting his own life at risk in order to protect and comfort the dying deer. This links to the war which Calum does not understand as innocent people are being killed and in a place where conflict does not exist, innocent animals are being killed for fun.
