In Act 2, Byrne uses a great deal of farcical humour to show the ridiculousness of Hector's "make-over".
Hector is forced into the cupboard to hide several times during this section of the play. This is humorous as other characters are not aware he is in there and they get a fright when he appears at various points.
- Lucille runs away terrified when she sees Hector’s face at the cupboard. - Lucille runs away when she sees his face at the window. - Spanky and Phil do not see why she has run away. They are both in the process of asking her to the staffie.
Physical comedy – pushing Hector into the cupboard, putting the clothes on him, Hector passing the gum to Phil to Mr Curry, Phil stealing Alan’s pen, Lucille’s dramatic exits…
Several different characters enter and exit the scene which adds to the fast pace and comedy. The audience worries they will discover where Hector is.
The whole scenario is ridiculous and the stage directions and what the characters say in relation to what has happened to Hector’s clothes are comical.
Bawdy jokes are made about Catholic girls and also Hector’s trousers being buttoned up the back. Puns and word play are also used to add to the humour.
