Hi folks,
This is just a ready reckoner for the Scottish Text Questions.
The Types of Question
You need to be alert to the types of question you can be asked. The main way to work out what you're asled to do is by looking at the Keywords.
You could be asked to.
Explain - this question will require you to put ideas and concepts into your own words. You can use supporting evidence, but it's your explanation Analyse - this will require you to identify techniques the writer has used. It will require quotation, identification of the technique and an explanation of how it has added to your understanding. Examine - Similar to analyse, though you may be making wider comments about characters and their personalities and motivation. This also requires quotation. Discuss - This is usually related to the last question and is asking you to make a series of points about the writer's themes/characters/techniques using quotation and comment.
The Final Question
The final question is worth 10 marks. and has a very clear structure.
It asks you to discuss how the extract relates to the rest of the text.
Therefore...
2 marks are given for you explaining what this extract has in common with the rest of the text. The clue may well be in the question.
2 Marks are given for analysing the extract
6 marks are then given for analysing other sections of the novel that are not given in the extract.
